School Enrollment Procedures

Education at the elementary and junior-high levels is mandatory in Japan. The Japanese mandatory education comprises six years of elementary education and three years of junior-high education. The academic year in Japan starts in April and ends in March. Which public elementary/junior-high school your child is set to go to in Hikone will be decided depending on which school district your registered address is. The following procedures are about how to enroll your child in school for the first time or how to switch schools after a recent move.

Moving Into Hikone

After the completion of your move-in procedures at the Hikone Life Service Division, please visit the Hikone Board of Education to do necessary paperwork to register your child/children for school. Be sure to hand in a certificate of school enrollment and documents related to the provision of school textbooks to the school your child/children is set to go to.

Moving Out Of Hikone

Be sure to notify the school your child currently goes to of your moving date, etc. beforehand. Necessary paperwork and requirements for school transfer will be provided by the current school in Hikone, and submit them to the new school.

Changing Your Addresses Within Hikone

Be sure to notify the school your child is currently enrolled in of your moving date, etc. beforehand. 

If the school district is going to change, please get necessary paperwork done at the Hikone School Education Division.

School Fees

School textbooks are all provided for free; however, parents/guardians are required to bear the costs of learning materials other than textbooks, school meals, field trips, school uniforms, and other necessary school expenses.

Financial Assistance for School Education

Low-income families with children in elementary and/or junior-high school qualify for the finical assistance program for school education. With that said, there are some terms and conditions, such as an income threshold, so please contact the Hikone Board of Education of the school your child goes for further details.

Support for Foreign Children

To assist foreign children and their parents/guardians to attend school with peace of mind, the Hikone Board of Education has foreign-language assistants in Portuguese and Tagalog
