The Japanese pension system is a compulsory pension system that all registered

residents of Japan are required to enroll in regardless of nationality.

Once a person enrolls in the pension system, they will receive a pension card

(see the image on the right). Please keep your pension handbook safe.

1. Employee’s Pension Insurance Plan:

A person who works full time or 30 hours a week or more can enroll in this pension plan. 

2. National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin):

A person who is self-employed, works part-time, not in employment, etc. is required to enroll in this pension plan. 

*There is also another pension plan for people with severe disabilities, called “Shogaisha Nenkin.”

*Japan has entered into pension agreements, called Totalization Agreements, with some foreign nations.

 

The Totalization Agreements are designed to eliminate dual pension coverage while maintaining the pension benefits. Please see the list of countries Japan has established the Totalization Agreements with as stated below.

Germany, United Kingdom, Republic of Korea, United States, Belgium, France, Canada, Australia, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Spain, Ireland, Brazil, Switzerland, Hungary, India, Luxembourg, Philippines, Slovak Republic, China, Finland
