Procedures at a Bank
When Opening a Bank Account
You need to apply to open a new bank account at a bank or Japanese Post office.
Usual Required Items
- Inkan (You can use an Inkan with your name carved in English, Katakana or Kanji.)
- Residence Card (To show your current address and name.)
When you successfully open a bank account, you will receive a bank card as well as a bank book. Afterwards, you can withdraw, transfer, receive money, etc. on an ATM machine with your bank card.
Bill Payments through Bank Transfer
You can pay for recurring bills, such as for utilities, resident tax, the National Health Insurance and other services, by bank transfer. You can also transfer money to someone’s bank account on an ATM machine. (You can have a choice to receive physical bills in the mail for your national health insurance, taxes and so on.)
